World’s First Ship-Based CO₂ Capture “Marine Factory”

12

  • AGOGO FPSO, the world’s first FPSO with offshore CCS, was named in Shanghai.
  • It will operate in Angola, producing 120,000 barrels per day with 1.6 million barrels of storage.
  • Equipped with CCS and advanced tech, it will cut CO₂ emissions by 230,000 tons annually.

AGOGO FPSO is the world’s first Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) unit integrated with offshore Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) technology, designed to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Transformed from a 320,000-dwt ultra-large crude oil carrier, it underwent extensive retrofitting at COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry in Shanghai.

Operational and Environmental Advancements

Once delivered, AGOGO FPSO will operate offshore Angola in Block 15/06 West Hub at a depth of 1,650 meters. With a production capacity of 120,000 barrels per day and storage for 1.6 million barrels, it is recognized as the world’s most environmentally friendly FPSO. During its docked phase, the vessel demonstrated a 27% reduction in carbon emissions through CCS technology.

Emission Reduction Technologies

The FPSO incorporates multiple cutting-edge technologies, including:

  • Electrification, automation, and digitalization for enhanced operational efficiency.
  • Combined cycle power systems, seawater turbine generators, and steam generators to optimize energy use.
  • A modular carbon capture system that captures CO₂ from exhaust emissions and reinjects it into seabed geological formations for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) or long-term storage.

Innovative Carbon Capture and Deep-Sea Storage

AGOGO FPSO features a modular carbon capture system that enables efficient CO₂ interception and reinjection. With an estimated annual CO₂ capture capacity of 230,000 tons, the FPSO sets a new standard for offshore decarbonization. Positioned in a deep-sea zone, it facilitates direct CO₂ storage, reducing transportation costs and maximizing efficiency.

Engineering Milestones and Global Significance

COSCO SHIPPING Heavy Industry Shanghai successfully completed over 15,000 tons of upper module lifting and 100,000 meters of cable installation, achieving all modifications a month ahead of schedule. The rapid completion of AGOGO FPSO’s retrofitting marks a global milestone in FPSO engineering and aligns with China’s vision for high-end manufacturing and low-carbon industrial advancements.
