On March 16, MSC, the largest container ship in the world, set sail on her first trip from Ningbo Zhoushan Port, the port with the highest cargo throughput volume in the world, as reported by Asia News.
Largest containership
The ship can carry up to 24,116 TEUs and is 399.99 metres long, 61.5 metres wide, and 33.2 metres high (20-foot equivalent units).
After being launched earlier this month in Shanghai, the ship, which was constructed by China State Shipbuilding Co Ltd, surpassed Ever Alot as the largest container ship in the world.
There are 11 berths in the Chuanshan port region, each of which can hold eight 200,000-ton cargo ships.
Bridge cranes and gantry cranes can be remotely controlled in the port area thanks to smart technologies.
In 2022, Ningbo Zhoushan Port carried 1.25 billion metric tonnes of cargo, leading the world for the 14th year in a row. The port had the third-largest container throughput volume in the world in 2017 with 33.35 million TEUs.
