  • China has designed the world’s largest nuclear-powered container ship.
  • It is a 24000 TEU-class vessel.
  • It allows swift containment in case of an accident.

China has unveiled the world’s largest nuclear-powered container ship design at the Marintec China 2023 exhibition in Shanghai, reports Global Times.

The Design

The ship, designed by Jiangnan Shipyard, is a 24000TEU-class vessel, a significant breakthrough in creating near-zero emission ships. It utilizes fourth-generation molten salt reactor technology, harnessing clean nuclear energy for propulsion. The design prioritizes energy efficiency and emissions reduction to address climate change concerns.

Safety Measure

Safety measures are paramount, with the reactor operating under high-temperature and low-pressure conditions, reducing the risk of a meltdown, and allowing for swift containment in case of an accident.

  1. Interested to know what all safety measures are incorporated, to contain radiation in case of an accident.
We experienced many accidents in latest technology adapted various application.
When this 24000 TEU vessel is out in international and territorial water, who takes the responsibility ?
How many countries will accept such a moving reactor in their water / port.

Instead, if China would have installed this reactor at China itself, produced Hydrogen, Ammonia etc and supplied these non fossil fuel to Ammonia and Hydrogen propelled ships, that would have been more responsible and applausible.
