The World Shipping Council (WSC) has welcomed the European Commission’s Competitiveness Compass, which will shape the EU’s Clean Industrial Deal. The WSC appreciates the recognition that decarbonization can enhance economic competitiveness while integrating with EU economic, competition, and trade policies.
Call for Stronger Support in Shipping Decarbonization
WSC President and CEO Joe Kramek emphasized the importance of EU support for the shipping sector’s transition to sustainable supply chains. “This is the moment for Europe to seize the opportunity to support shipping in contributing to the competitiveness of a sustainable future EU economy,” he stated.
The WSC also urged the Commission to ensure open trade policies and the protection of critical sea lanes from geopolitical disruptions.
Investment in Renewable Energy & Sustainable Fuels
The Competitiveness Compass outlines steps to de-risk investments in renewable energy and the production and distribution of low-carbon transport fuels. These measures are essential for Europe to establish itself as a leading maritime energy hub.
Enhancing Supply Chain Resilience & Reducing Barriers
With exports contributing over €2 trillion annually, the EU depends on efficient sea transport, which handles 90% of its trade by volume. The WSC supports the Commission’s pledge to:
- Complete the EU single market.
- Reduce administrative burdens for ocean carriers and shippers.
- Create a seamless maritime space by eliminating customs formalities for intra-EU sea transport.
- Streamline external border controls and harmonize regulations.
Strengthening Industry-Government Collaboration
The WSC welcomed the Commission’s acknowledgment that close partnerships with industry are vital for effective legislation and policy implementation. It advocated for a collaborative approach to ensure that regulatory frameworks support maritime competitiveness and sustainability.
With the right policies in place, the EU can enhance its global shipping leadership while accelerating the transition to a greener, more competitive maritime industry.
