Wuhu Shipyard’s Fourth Eco-Efficient Chemical Tanker Earns Industry Validation

45

China’s Wuhu Shipyard has achieved another milestone in green shipbuilding with the validation of its fourth eco-efficient chemical tanker model.

Designed with a strong focus on sustainability, safety, and evolving market requirements, the vessel has already garnered attention from global chemical tanker owners for its reduced power consumption and cost-effective design.

CFD-Optimized Design for Greater Efficiency

Developed in partnership with Japanese software firm iFTC, the vessel’s hull form was refined using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to achieve optimal performance. The tanker is equipped with a high-efficiency propeller and other advanced energy-saving technologies, enabling it to exceed the IMO’s EEDI Phase 3 benchmarks.

Compared to similar vessels, the new design is expected to cut power consumption by 7–8% at equal speeds, contributing significantly to fuel efficiency and emissions reduction.

Cost-Efficient Systems and Green Construction Focus

In addition to performance improvements, Wuhu Shipyard also prioritized cost control. The company reported electromechanical system optimizations that will reduce construction expenses as the model enters the production phase.

This aligns with Wuhu’s broader commitment to environmentally conscious shipbuilding, backed by sister companies like SanDianShui New Energy Technology Co., which focuses on new-energy vessels, and Haizhi institutes working on next-gen designs.

Expansion, Digitalization, and Global Outreach

The shipyard has recently expanded its physical capacity with two new slipways and stainless steel production sites, and has begun constructing a smart factory to embrace digital transformation and intelligent manufacturing.

Looking beyond China, Wuhu Shipyard is now eyeing European markets. In June 2024, it entered a partnership with Germany’s Tamm Media to jointly promote green shipbuilding technology and integrate international market experience and resources.

With its fourth validated chemical tanker model, Wuhu Shipyard demonstrates how data-driven design, green technology, and cost efficiency can come together in modern shipbuilding. As interest grows globally, the company’s continued focus on innovation and international cooperation positions it as a rising leader in the sustainable maritime future.
