On September 18, 2024, a 31-meter luxury yacht named Admiral caught fire while docked in a harbor in Los Angeles County. The fire began at around 8:30 p.m., and authorities quickly responded to the scene, reports Marine Insight.

Massive Ammunition and Fireworks Onboard

The yacht was carrying approximately 1,000 rounds of live ammunition and fireworks, which caught fire and contributed to the severity of the incident. Fortunately, the two people onboard escaped unharmed, and there was no report of serious injuries.

While firefighters managed to control the flames above deck, the fire continued to burn below, causing the vessel to list. By 11:33 p.m., the yacht had sunk at the pier.

Environmental Cleanup Operations Underway

As the Admiral sank, it leaked around 4,000 gallons of red-dye diesel into the water. The United States Coast Guard responded immediately, using booms to contain the spill and prevent further contamination.

Clean Harbors and Patriot Environmental Services initiated cleanup efforts, working alongside local authorities, including the county sheriff’s office and the state office of Fish and Wildlife. Environmental management teams are closely monitoring the situation.

Flames and Explosions Witnessed by Onlookers

Witnesses described the intensity of the fire, with flames rising 20 to 30 feet into the air and the sound of ammunition being discharged as the fire consumed the vessel. Video footage captured by Captain Tide on X shows the Admiral fully engulfed in flames.

By the morning of September 19, 2024, the Broward Marine yacht, built in 1986, had burned extensively and was partially submerged in the harbor.

Cause of the Fire Under Investigation

The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, and authorities are investigating to determine what led to the blaze. While one person sustained minor injuries, no one required serious medical attention.

Authorities are also assessing the environmental damage caused by the fuel spill. The clean-up process is ongoing, with efforts focused on minimizing the ecological impact of the incident.
