Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation has taken a significant step toward greener and more efficient shipping by finalizing contracts for six 8,000 TEU-class methanol dual-fuel-ready containerships. The contracts were signed with Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd., Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., and Shoei Kisen Kaisha, Ltd., marking a strategic move to modernize its fleet and enhance global network capacity. The signing ceremony took place at the Imabari International Hotel on October 28, underscoring Yang Ming’s commitment to sustainability and fleet renewal.
Fleet Modernization and Efficiency Goals
The new contracts include the purchase of three vessels and newbuilding orders for another three, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2028. These vessels will replace Yang Ming’s older 5,500 TEU-class ships that have served for over two decades. Designed for high efficiency and reduced emissions, the new ships will feature advanced propulsion systems such as optimized propellers, energy-saving rudders, and rudder fins. These technologies will ensure lower fuel consumption and improved operational flexibility across key trade routes, aligning with international environmental regulations.
By integrating dual-fuel-ready engines, Yang Ming aims to prepare its fleet for future conversion to green methanol fuel a crucial step in the maritime industry’s decarbonization efforts.
