Yangshan Port in Shanghai has marked a significant milestone in China’s maritime energy transition by becoming the country’s first port to offer bunkering services for a wide range of clean and compliant marine fuels. These include liquefied natural gas (LNG), green methanol, biofuels, and ultra-low sulfur fuel oil. The port’s upgraded capabilities align with evolving global environmental regulations and China’s commitment to green shipping.
Historic First: Ship-to-Ship Bunkering of Domestic Ultra-Low Sulfur Fuel Oil
In a landmark operation, the bunkering vessel Qi Hong 9 recently supplied 875 tonnes of domestically produced ultra-low sulfur fuel oil to the COSCO PRIDE, an internationally navigating vessel. This marked the first ship-to-ship bunkering operation in China using domestically produced ultra-low sulfur fuel oil for an ocean-going vessel. The fuel was manufactured by PetroChina Huabei Petrochemical Company, showcasing China’s growing capacity to supply cleaner fuels domestically.
This operation is particularly timely as the International Maritime Organization (IMO) is set to enforce stricter sulfur content regulations in certain waters, reducing the allowable limit from 0.5% to 0.1% starting May 1, 2025. Yangshan’s readiness with compliant fuels positions it as a strategic hub in meeting new global standards.
Diversified Fuel Services Reflect China’s Push for Green Shipping
Yangshan Port’s ability to supply LNG, green methanol, biofuels, and ultra-low sulfur fuel oil marks a significant leap in China’s maritime energy infrastructure. These alternative fuels offer lower emissions and support decarbonization efforts across the global shipping industry. The move aligns with China’s broader environmental and energy goals, including its push to become carbon-neutral before 2060 and to promote sustainable port development.
By offering multiple cleaner fuel options, Yangshan is not only meeting current demand but also anticipating future requirements of international carriers transitioning to greener propulsion systems.
Yangshan Port’s advancement into a multi-fuel bunkering facility represents a bold step in China’s maritime decarbonization journey. With its strategic location and diversified fuel offerings, the port is poised to play a crucial role in supporting green shipping corridors and helping international fleets comply with tightening emissions regulations. This development signals China’s growing leadership in fostering environmentally sustainable maritime logistics.
