Yara Clean Ammonia (YCA), the world’s largest ammonia distributor, has entered into a long-term shipping agreement with Navigator Amon Shipping to secure two state-of-the-art medium gas carriers (MGCs). Each vessel has a 51,000 cbm capacity and is equipped with dual-fuel engines and ice-class notation, ensuring reliable year-round access to Northern Europe. The agreement strengthens YCA’s position as a global leader in low-emission ammonia distribution.

Driving Operational Efficiency and Competitiveness

By committing to flexible and energy-efficient shipping capacity under long-term time-charter agreements, YCA is advancing its strategy to develop resilient, cost-efficient, and scalable intercontinental supply chains. The two MGCs will reduce freight costs per tonne, improve margins, and enhance operational flexibility. With their advanced design and compliance with tightening environmental standards, the vessels will help future-proof YCA’s shipping operations and improve competitiveness in the fast-growing low-emission ammonia sector.

Strategic Importance for the Hydrogen Economy

Hans Olav Raen, CEO of Yara Clean Ammonia, emphasized that scalable, reliable supply chains are essential to unlocking the hydrogen economy. He highlighted the new contract as a cost-effective way to transport large volumes of ammonia to Europe, addressing logistical challenges while achieving economies of scale.

Partner Perspectives

Navigator Gas Chief Commercial Officer Oeyvind Lindeman stated that the addition of the new ammonia carriers reflects Navigator’s growing collaboration with YCA at a time of rising global demand for low-carbon commodities. He stressed that the vessels are part of building the core infrastructure needed to accelerate clean energy adoption, using technology aligned with both current and future environmental requirements.

André Risholm, CEO of Amon Maritime, added that the project represents a milestone in realizing his company’s founding vision to lead the green shift in shipping. By partnering with YCA and Navigator Gas, Amon Maritime is helping bring ammonia-fueled transportation into commercial operation and advancing the transition toward carbon-free global shipping.
