Yemen’s Houthi group has rejected calls from both the U.S. and Iran to dial down their actions in the Red Sea, where they resumed attacks on Israeli ships, reports Reuters.
Despite U.S. military strikes and Iranian appeals to cool tensions, Houthi foreign minister Jamal Amer emphasized that the group would continue its operations, citing their right to defend themselves. The Houthis’ renewed attacks are in response to the ongoing aid blockade in Gaza, which they view as a provocation. This stance highlights Yemen’s continued defiance amid a broader regional conflict.
U.S. and Iranian Pressure
The U.S. has escalated military actions in Yemen, targeting areas under Houthi control. Meanwhile, Iran privately advised the Houthis to ease tensions, though the Houthis maintain they operate independently and are not influenced by Tehran’s directives. Despite this, both countries remain involved in the regional conflict, raising concerns over further escalation.
Ongoing Conflict and Regional Implications
The Houthis’ attacks on shipping routes are framed as solidarity with Palestinians. Their actions, including more than 100 attacks since November 2023, are fueling the conflict between regional powers, particularly as the U.S. and Iran face off on multiple fronts in the Middle East. The Houthis’ persistent resistance signals potential for prolonged regional instability.
