Frontier Fuels’ marine-grade B100 biofuel, Bloom E, features a well-to-wake GHG intensity of just 4 gCO₂eq/MJ, offering a high-performance and competitively priced alternative to traditional marine fuels.
ZERO44, a leading emissions management software provider, has announced a strategic collaboration with Frontier Fuels, a sustainable biofuel supplier. The partnership aims to support shipowners, managers, and charterers in navigating increasingly complex regulatory frameworks, such as FuelEU Maritime, EU ETS, and the CII requirements introduced in 2023 and 2024, according to American Journal of Transportation.
As emissions regulations become more stringent, shipping companies must adopt proactive, data-driven compliance strategies that include pooling, banking, borrowing, or facing penalties. Biofuels are gaining traction as a practical and cost-effective tool in achieving regulatory targets.
Biofuels Gaining Momentum in Maritime Strategy
“Biofuels have transitioned from a short-term solution to a strategic choice,” explains Johann Maack, Managing Director at Frontier Fuels. With supply chains improving and regulatory frameworks promoting adoption, the use of biofuels in maritime operations is on the rise.
However, integrating biofuels into existing bunkering operations remains challenging for many companies due to concerns around availability, engine compatibility, and the right blend ratios for compliance. The collaboration between ZERO44 and Frontier Fuels directly addresses these concerns by combining advanced compliance software with practical fuel supply solutions.
ZERO44’s Enhanced Emissions Software with Biofuel Insights
ZERO44’s emissions platform empowers maritime stakeholders to monitor, predict, and plan emissions compliance at voyage, period, or annual levels. The system offers vessel-specific models or allows users to input their consumption forecasts.
The recent addition of a biofuel recommendation module significantly enhances the platform. “We give clients precise recommendations on the biofuel volumes needed to meet FuelEU Maritime targets,” says Friederike Hesse, Managing Director and Co-Founder of ZERO44. “Our model incorporates vessel data, operational characteristics, EU exposure, and fuel mix to deliver customized and actionable insights.”
Bloom E: A Game-Changer for Marine Biofuels
With the integration of Frontier Fuels into ZERO44’s software, users can now evaluate the benefits of incorporating Bloom E, a marine-grade B100 biofuel. Bloom E offers a well-to-wake GHG intensity of just 4 gCO₂eq/MJ, far lower than conventional alternatives, which typically emit four to five times more.
Despite its superior environmental profile, Bloom E remains cost-competitive and flexible, available in custom blends, delivery sizes, and at major bunkering ports. This makes it an ideal fit for maritime operators looking to align sustainability with operational efficiency.
A Collaborative Step Toward Greener Shipping
“Our goal is to give clients access to the best options and help them compare strategies,” Hesse adds. “ZERO44’s tools enable users to evaluate different fuel sources, customize inputs, and find the most suitable compliance path based on their business model.”
The partnership marks a significant move toward simplifying the adoption of sustainable fuels in the maritime industry. By combining ZERO44’s emissions management expertise with Frontier Fuels’ practical biofuel solutions, the collaboration ensures that shipping companies are well-prepared to stay compliant, competitive, and environmentally responsible amid shifting regulatory demands.
