Two prominent industry organizations, the Zero Emissions Ship Technology Association (ZESTAs) and the Skies and Seas Hydrogen-fuels Accelerator (SASHA) Coalition, have joined forces to push for bold policy action and the widespread adoption of green shipping technologies. With a shared commitment to absolute zero-emission solutions, their collaboration marks a major step toward decarbonizing the maritime industry.
Unified Industry Voice for Policy and Innovation
ZESTAs and SASHA, representing around 70 companies, aim to fill critical gaps in current maritime climate policies. Their joint advocacy focuses on promoting technologies such as hydrogen fuel, battery-electric propulsion, and wind-assisted systems. As stated by SASHA’s EU Policy Director Aurelia Leeuw, current regulations fail to adequately support companies ready to adopt zero-emission technologies. The partnership seeks to bridge this policy gap by directly engaging with regulators to ensure supportive frameworks and incentives are in place.
Call to Strengthen EU Maritime Climate Policies
In May 2025, both coalitions co-signed a letter urging the European Commission to enhance the EU’s green shipping regulations, which they believe fall short compared to the scale of the climate crisis. Key recommendations included financial support for e-fuel producers, expanding the EU ETS to smaller vessels, and tightening FuelEU Maritime targets. By pushing for a robust policy environment, ZESTAs and SASHA hope to make clean maritime technologies commercially viable and accelerate the global energy transition.
The partnership between ZESTAs and the SASHA Coalition represents a powerful alignment of technological innovation and policy advocacy. With growing urgency around ocean health and climate change, their united efforts aim to ensure that the maritime sector not only catches up with decarbonization goals but becomes a leader in clean transportation. Through collaborative pressure on regulators and industry, they are paving the way for a truly zero-emission maritime future.
