Carolina Beach Dive Bar Holds Small Piece of American History

Dive Bar

When you walk through the doors of the fat pelican you’ll be greeted by a lot of beer and a lot of decor.  Some people might call it random, but owner Danny Mclaughlin calls it “eclectic.”

Each item has it’s own story, whether it’s the license plate from the Department of Corrections or the bull sitting atop the bar’s roof.  But mixed in with all of the knick-knacks, disguised as a lamp, sits a piece of American history that could be worth thousands — a piece of the USS Enterprise.

McLaughlin said he picked the gun mount up for five bucks at a yard sale in Connecticut.  It’s a price he is calling unbelievable.

“Anyone who knows anything about the second world war knows this ship.  The enterprise was one of the biggest ships,” McLaughlin said.

The United States Navy aircraft carrier was launched in 1936 and was one of three American carriers commissioned prior to World War II to survive the war.  She participated in more major actions of the war against Japan than any other U.S. ship and became the most decorated American ship of World War II.

McLaughlin told he had no idea the gun mount turned lamp would have so much meaning for his patrons.

“The Navy veterans really get a kick out of it,” McLaughlin said.
