Oil Spill Alert! Tanker and Bulker Collide

An oil spill alert was raised off the Southern peninsula state of Johor, after a tanker and bulker collided with each other on August 17.

What happened?

On August 17, a chemical tanker ‘Chemroad Mega’ collided with a bulker off Tompok Utara near Pengerang, Kota Tinggi.

Fortunately, no one was injured during the collision but both vessels suffered significant damages. An oil spill alarm was raised in the area surrounding the vessel.

Clean up measures underway:

Datuk Ayub Rahmat, Johor Health, Environment, Education and Information Committee said, “Both vessels are now anchored at a location seven nautical miles southeast of Tompok Utara”.

The vessels will be detained until the oil spill is completed and will only be released after the owners furnish a a RM5m ($1.16m) bond.
