An anchor handling tug and supply vessel was attacked off the coast of Nigeria on tuesday.  The pirates held two of the crewmen, one Nigerian national and one Russian national.  The vessel with the other ten crew members has now reached the Onne Port safely.

Reports say that an emergency cell has been set up, and that it is in contact with the crew members’ family to support them while the situation unfolds.

Maritime security firm Protection Group International recently suggested that a government crackdown on oil theft is fuelling the notable increase in kidnapping and sabotage attacks in the Niger Delta as regional militant gangs move away from oil theft as their preferred source of revenue.
