Chile’s coast has a long history of devastating earthquakes. The necessity had made them step up their quake- monitoring and retrofit buildings to better withstand them. Hence, the toll of even an 8.3-magnitude earthquake that struck off Chile’s coast Wednesday night was minimal. It could have been far more devastating.
There was an efficient response to the earthquake which was of a deadly disaster of massive proportions and “right measures have been taken,” said President Michelle Bachelet. The experience paid well. Still, damage assessments and cleanup efforts are not yet over. The 16-feet tsunami waves triggered by the quake which had killed at least 11 people. The coastline is one of the hardest hit regions. And more than 170 homes were destroyed.
