A Suezmax tanker had to be moved to Le Havre from outer anchorage by 5 tugs on Apr 24 for safety reasons, after the tanker was immobilized, reports Maritime Bulletin.
What happened?
The Suezmax tanker was immobilized due to mass crew sickness. 16 out of 25 crew were tested positive, of 2 crew airlifted to hospital on Apr 20, one, who’s a Chief Engineer, was later moved to ICU and as of Apr 24, remained at ICU.
Boluda Towage Group was contracted for moving the immobilized tanker from anchorage to Le Havre.
Ship immobilized due to sick crew
This is the first time in recent history that a ship is immobilized by mass crew sickness. Another recent case was with a Turkish coaster at Temryuk port, Russia, in Feb this year, where most of the crew were poisoned by cargo toxic vapors.
Crew Medevaced
Suezmax tanker requested medical assistance to two sick crew in the evening Apr 20 off Le Havre, France. MRCC Jobourg scrambled the helicopter, both crews were airlifted and transported to the hospital at Le Havre.
The tanker left Port du Havre-Antifer, France, in the morning Apr 19, and anchored at Le Havre outer anchorage the same day, she remained anchored as of morning Apr 21.
