Oil Spill Drill Near Vancouver

A mock ‘oil-spill drill’ will be conducted near Vancouver on Thursday morning at 10.00 AM.  Kinder Morgan is to conduct a mock oil spill simulating a release of 160,000 litres of oil at its Westridge Marine Terminal in Burnaby, about 30 minutes outside Vancouver.  The exercise will feature a mimicked failure of a loading arm when loading the crude into a tanker.  The test is intended to ‘recover’ 160,000 litres of oil involving municipal and provincial authorities in addition to the salvage firm, Western Canada Marine Response Corporation (WCMRC).

During the test, in order to test response times, the crews will deploy booms and absorbent sponges in a large enough area to surround a tanker.  There won’t be neither any ‘real’ ship in the dock nor any ‘release’ into the waters.

A command centre similar to the one established during the MV Marathassa spill in Vancouver’s English Bay in April 2015 will be set up to test the efficacy of the operation.  The test will be monitored by the National Energy Board (NEB).
