Further to our News on Hurricane Patricia Grounds And Threatens Breaking Of Bulk Carrier, here is an update on the salvage operations planned on the stricken ship.
On 23rd October, the 223-meter, Mexican-flagged bulk carrier has been pinned against rocks in Barra de Navidad in Jalisco where the vessel lost the battle against Patricia, a powerful Hurricane of category 5 – which turned out to be strongest hurricane ever recorded on earth. All 27 crew members were evacuated from the vessel without injuries. It is being reported that the ship is beyond repair and will need to be scuttled in the area.
According the environmental authority PROFEPA, work has begun to prepare the ship for the removal of all 11.5 cubic meters of oil, 490 cubic meters of diesel and other contaminants. The agency says that no oil spill has been detected since the initial grounding and booms has been already deployed in an attempt to prevent further destruction.
