Strong winds overturned a small tourist boat killing 13
A tourist boat ignored a sailing ban issued by authorities since Friday and sailed off Little Corn Island, a remote island 45 miles (70 kilometers) off the coast of Nicaragua.
As a result, strong winds and waves overturned the boat killing 13. Twenty-one people were rescued, 13 from Costa Rica, three from Nicaragua, two from Britain, two U.S. citizens and one Brazilian.
Authorities have opened proceedings against the boat owner and an assistant. Local authorities had reportedly suspended boat launches in the area due to high wind speeds that reached 25 to 30 knots (29 to 35 mph) after several days of stormy weather.
Government spokeswoman Rosario Murillo told El 19 Digital the incident had been “a great tragedy”.
