Incident : Vessel Grounding
Date : 13th February 2016
Vessel Type Involved : Cargo Ship
Location : off the Isle of Wight
Casualties/Pollution : Nil

It is just two weeks after a 19,000 TEU container vessel ran aground near port of Hamburg, here is one more.  A 14,000 TEU, Singapore-registered Container ship was forced to execute a ‘controlled grounding’ at Bramble Bank after the vessel experienced a power failure.  It took eight high powered tugs to ease the ship from the soft river banks and refloat it.

The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency said that it responded to the incident and dispatched eight tugs to assist the containership by Port of Southampton Vessel Traffic Services (VTS).  Just after midnight, the ship began to move with the assistance of a rising tide and tug boats.

The reports state that the vessel was enroute from Le Havre to Southampton carrying a cargo listed as “Hazard A (Major)”.  Fortunately, there were no reports of casualties nor pollution.

In a statement, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency said: “The container ship is now under tow and making its way to Southampton Port.”

“Port of Southampton Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) sent eight tugs to the vessel. At this time no damage or pollution has been reported, the Coastguard continue to monitor the situation.”

The latest update reports that the vessel has been freed and is now back in port after being pulled into deeper water.
