Russia general killed

A Russian general was killed in battle, according to the Ukrainian military intelligence agency, a rare occurrence in recent times.

Maj. Gen. Vitaly Gerasimov, 45, was recognised by Ukraine as having fought alongside Russian forces in Syria and Chechnya, as well as taking part in the invasion of Crimea in 2014. He was slain near Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, according to the spy service.

It was impossible to independently confirm the death. Russia has been silent.

It’s unusual for a senior military leader to die in combat, but Gerasimov is the second Russian general reported to have died in the Ukraine conflict. Last Monday, the Russian 7th Airborne Division’s commanding commander, Maj. Gen. Andrei Sukhovetsky was murdered.
