French shipping giant CMA CGM has placed an order for four 23,000-teu LNG dual-fuel containerships at China’s Hudong-Zhonghua, according to shipbuilding sources, says an article published on LNG Prime.

Shipbuilding deal

The two firms signed the shipbuilding contract for the containerships, sources told LNG Prime.

LNG Prime reported in August, citing sources, that CMA CGM and Hudong-Zhonghua were close to signing the shipbuilding deal for these four new 23,000-teu LNG-powered ships.

Additional details

Prior to that CMA CGM revealed orders for ten LNG dual-fuel containerships and six methanol-fueled vessels, but the firm did not disclose any additional details regarding the yards.

Build methanol-fueled ships

South Korea’s Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries won the order for the six 7,900 TEU LNG-fueled vessels, while China’s Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC), part of CSSC, will build the methanol-fueled ships.

Delivered nine

Hudong-Zhonghua and Jiangnan, both part of CSSC, already delivered nine 23,000-teu LNG-powered vessels to CMA CGM.

In June last year, CMA CGM welcomed the ninth and the last vessel in this series, Sorbonne, in its fleet.

Giants feature

These 400 meters long and 61 meters wide LNG-powered giants feature WinGD’s dual-fuel engines and GTT’s 18,600-cbm fuel tank.

Previous vessel

The four new 23,000-teu vessels would have the same specifications as the previous vessel, the sources said.

The price tag of the vessels was not disclosed.
