The South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries has placed a new order with French LNG containment expert GTT, as reported by LNG Prime.

Expected delivery

According to a release, GTT will design the tanks for two 174,000 cbm LNG carriers under the terms of the contract, which are expected to be delivered between the third quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027.

The Mark III Flex membrane containment system from GTT will be installed in the tanks.

GTT, a Paris-based company, made no additional disclosures.

This transaction is apparently connected to SHI’s February 1 statement that it would construct two LNG carriers for about $248 million each.

Delivering warships

By January 15, 2027, the shipbuilder stated it intended to deliver the warships to an unnamed owner in Oceania.

SHI originally disclosed this order for an LNG ship in 2023.

According to shipbuilding sources, this deal is being driven by Japan’s largest shipping company, MOL.

GTT received a record 162 orders for LNG carriers and one FSRU in 2022, including orders from SHI.

The business anticipates receiving up to 450 orders for substantial LNG carriers between 2023 and 2032.
