Eight containers, carrying toxic materials, aboard the grounded container ship that ran aground off Taiwan three weeks ago, will be offloaded by means of a floating crane by April 3.
Earlier, Mfame reported that on 10th March 2016, the container ship ran aground off the coast of New Taipei. With regards to the salvage operation, the owner of the vessel reported that:
- Eight containers carrying toxic materials will be removed by April 3.
- A crane vessel reportedly departed Kaohsiung on Wednesday afternoon and is expected to arrive by Friday.
- Resolve Marine and Nippon Salvage have been contracted to assist with the salvage operations.
Also, earlier Mfame reports stated that there was a massive oil slick from the stranded ship, after the vessel broke releasing heavy oil into the sea. When she went aground, the vessel was reportedly carried about 70,000 gallons of fuel, plus lube oil and oily wastewater; a combined task force has been working to lighter the pollutants, but weather has been poor, slowing the work.
Taiwan’s Fisheries Agency said that there was no sign of toxicity in samples of fish collected from the waters near the grounded vessel and that there was no cause for concern.
All the 21 crew members onboard the vessel were evacuated by the Taiwan’s National Airborne Service Corps. Shortly thereafter, during spill mitigation work, a Service Corps helicopter went down, killing two and seriously injuring one, reports say.
Government spokesman Sun Lih-chyun informed that the International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation has also dispatched experts to advise on-site.
