The Maasvlakte II terminal in Rotterdam will be expanded, according to APM Terminals, one of the top container terminal operators in the world and a subsidiary of A.P. Moller-Maersk. A property of 47.5 hectares and 1,000 metres of the deep-sea quay is included in the project. The new quay walls are now being built by the Port of Rotterdam Authority and will be finished by the middle of 2024. The new section is anticipated to be operational in the second half of 2026 and will enhance the terminal’s capacity by about 2 million TEU (standard size for containers).
Installing shore power
In 2015, APM Terminals at Maasvlakte II opened as a fully automated, carbon-neutral operation. The new portion of the terminal will also have net-zero emissions during operation, be fully automated, and be set up for installing shore power.
We are thrilled with APM Terminals’ decision to extend the terminal and to select Rotterdam as the hub for its operations in Western Europe, according to Allard Castelein, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority. To continue handling the rising container volumes in the upcoming years efficiently and responsibly, this extra terminal capacity is crucial.
‘On-dock’ services
“Our decision to invest more and grow in Maasvlakte II is a validation of Rotterdam’s importance for global supply chains and our global network,” said Keith Svendsen, CEO of APM Terminals. “We anticipate this significant endeavour and the possibilities it will present.”
A.P. Moller-Maersk already leased 18.5 hectares of property in the same location last year for the construction of cross-dock and cold storage facilities that will debut in 2024. One of the terminal’s primary shipping-line clients, Maersk, will receive “on-dock” services from the facilities.
A.P. Moller – Maersk’s Star Container Services will also have a vacant depot of around 16 hectares added to the new port site, right next to APM Terminals Maasvlakte II.
With the announcement of Maasvlakte II, all of APM Terminals’ remaining unoccupied sites in the port’s Amaliahaven region have now been leased for development initiatives.
