Collaboration is a key for big ship success.
[PTI Editor Richard Joy speaks to Executive Director of the Port of Los Angeles Gene Seroka on how to handle the largest ships calling in the whole of the US.]
How do you engage your shipping lines and container terminal?
Reports prove that many ports and terminals do not plan ahead. This lack in planning always leaves a problem of poor access to the truckers and the actual owners of the cargo. The Owners face a delay in receiving the cargo even when the containers are promptly discharged from the vessel and clear customs.
Key to handling big ships:
- Improved sharing of real-time information will allow all parties to better coordinate the release of containers.
- Terminals must engage in vessel stowage planning in advance in order to optimise their resources.
- Shipping lines must have better capacity management, allowing shipping lines and terminals to handle berthing windows.
- The availability of Big data for the ports and shipping lines, must ensure the establishment of cloud-based technology and wifi capabilities that provide a network to connect various devices.
XVELA, subsidiary of TOS system provider Navis, has recently announced Hapag-Lloyd as the first carrier to enter into a pilot program of its cloud-based collaboration and real time information-sharing solution.
