This innovative vessel aims to address two goals simultaneously: providing a solution for biofuel supply and contributing to the decarbonization of the naval industry by reducing emissions from fleets. The vessel’s design is versatile, accommodating various propulsion options such as conventional, diesel-electric, or hybrid systems, as well as offering different sulfate cleaning systems (open, closed, or mixed). Notably, it incorporates an inventive CO2 capture system, further enhancing its environmental sustainability, as reported by Sener.

Conceptual new design

Sener, a renowned technology and engineering group in the naval sector, has completed the conceptual design of a sustainable tanker model. The purpose of this tanker is to supply biofuels during bunkering operations while complying with the energy efficiency and emission reduction requirements set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The multi-product supply vessel is designed to transport various types of fuels, including heavy fuel oil (HFO), very low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO), biofuels, and marine gas oils (MGO). Additionally, the vessel is equipped with the capability to store captured CO2 from nearby ships.

The conceptual design offers shipowners a range of technical and economic configurations to suit their specific needs and priorities. They can choose from different propulsion alternatives such as conventional, diesel-electric, or hybrid systems. Furthermore, the design provides options for sulfate cleaning systems, including open, closed, or mixed configurations. Shipowners can also select from various CO2 capture systems.

This design aims to provide flexibility and choice to shipowners, enabling them to select the most suitable alternatives based on factors such as cost, ease of installation, and safety. By offering a comprehensive range of options, Sener’s sustainable tanker design contributes to the maritime industry’s efforts in reducing emissions and promoting environmentally friendly practices.

Carbon collectors, technology to decarbonize the naval industry

In response to the new requirements of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the European Union (EU) to control greenhouse gas emissions, the naval sector is striving to achieve more energy-efficient vessels with reduced emissions. Sener, leveraging its extensive experience in the naval industry, has designed a new tanker ship that addresses these challenges.

The innovative design by Sener incorporates a comprehensive emission reduction and management system. This system includes a CO2 capture and storage system, a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to convert nitrogen oxides into diatomic nitrogen and water using a catalyst, and a sulfate cleaning system. Notably, the tanker is equipped to store CO2 captured by neighbouring vessels, promoting emission reduction within the operational area.

Sener’s expertise in the naval sector, accumulated over several decades, has enabled the integration of carbon capture technologies into their tanker design. The company has been involved in providing various engineering services, such as conceptual, basic, and detailed design, feasibility studies, and consulting. Their areas of focus include digitization, alternative fuels and biofuels, emissions-cleaning technologies, the circular economy, and more.

Sener is actively engaged in developing innovative technologies that contribute to the decarbonization of the naval sector. For instance, the company has conducted feasibility studies with customers to explore the generation of hydrogen onboard fleets using a multi-product reformer capable of working with ethanol, methanol, or ammonia.

By combining their knowledge and experience with cutting-edge technologies, Sener is committed to supporting the naval sector in its transition towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly practices.

Roberto Fernández Pascual, Director of the Naval Business Unit at Sener, notes that “decarbonizing the naval sector is a very important objective for the economy as a whole, beyond the impact on the maritime industry. At Sener, we believe that research and development on innovative technologies that will help us achieve this efficiently are essential if we are to satisfy the IMO and EU demands in this regard. The fleet analysis is a tool to optimize technical and economic resources to help shipowners and shippers in this transition.”
