ClassNK grants Approval in Principle (AiP) to GTT’s Cargo Containment System (CCS) and Cargo Handling System (CHS) for liquefied hydrogen carriers, advancing green maritime transportation. The AiP signifies compliance with regulations and GTT’s commitment to hydrogen transportation technology. It’s a vital step towards sustainable shipping and a decarbonized future. Says an article from ClassNK website.

Receives Approval

ClassNK, a leading ship classification society, has issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) for GTT’s Cargo Containment System (CCS) and Cargo Handling System (CHS) designed for liquefied hydrogen carriers. With hydrogen emerging as a clean energy source for decarbonization, this milestone marks a significant step in establishing a hydrogen supply chain for maritime transportation.

A Collaborative Effort

ClassNK conducted a thorough design review of GTT’s CCS and CHS, adhering to its Part N of Rules for the Survey and Construction of Steel Ships and Guidelines for Liquefied Hydrogen Carriers, which incorporate the IGC Code and IMO’s Interim Recommendations for Carriage of Liquefied Hydrogen in Bulk. A Hazard Identification (HAZID) workshop was also held to assess potential hazards and risks. The issuance of the AiP signifies compliance with the prescribed requirements and reflects GTT’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of hydrogen transportation technology.

Charting the Course for Sustainable Shipping

Philippe Berterottière, Chairman, and CEO of GTT, expressed pride in receiving ClassNK’s approval, acknowledging their technical expertise and regulatory knowledge in hydrogen. GTT views the development of hydrogen containment systems as a pivotal element in expediting the energy transition and achieving sustainable shipping practices. The company’s dedicated R&D teams strive to make this technology viable and readily available for maritime transport and the broader energy industry.

Decarbonized Future

Masaki Matsunaga, Corporate Officer/Director of Plan Approval and Technical Solution Division at ClassNK, highlighted the significance of hydrogen transportation in building a decarbonized society. Their involvement in GTT’s pioneering initiative, through safety assessment expertise, underlines their commitment to supporting innovative projects that contribute to a sustainable and environmentally friendly future. The AiP serves as an important foundation for ensuring compliance and efficiency in the design and implementation of hydrogen carriers.
