  • Wärtsilä to supply world’s first methanol-fueled hybrid RoRo vessels for Stena RoRo, ushering in sustainable shipping.
  • Cutting-edge technology includes multi-fuel engines, hybrid systems, and shore power for carbon-free port operations.
  • Collaboration reflects a shared commitment to decarbonization and creating the greenest Ro-Ro vessels on the market.

A Sustainable Milestone

In a groundbreaking development for sustainable shipping, Wärtsilä, a leading technology group, has been selected to supply an integrated hybrid propulsion system for two revolutionary RoRo vessels. These ships, set to be built at China Merchants Jinling shipyard (Weihai) Co., Ltd for the esteemed Swedish shipping company Stena RoRo, will mark a historic milestone as the world’s first methanol-fueled hybrid RoRo vessels.

A Technological Marvel

The heart of these innovative vessels will be powered by two Wärtsilä 32M multi-fuel engines, now equipped to operate on methanol fuel and boasting ammonia-ready notation. Beyond the engines, Wärtsilä will provide a comprehensive suite of equipment, including gearboxes, controllable pitch propellers (CPP), bow thrusters, navigation systems, auxiliary engines, and a cutting-edge hybrid electric system. This holistic approach ensures seamless integration and efficient operation.

Optimizing Sustainability and Efficiency

These vessels will feature the Wärtsilä Hybrid Solution, optimizing fuel consumption today and future-proofing for full green operation. Moreover, Wärtsilä’s shore power solution will enable carbon-free operations while the vessels are in port, further reducing their environmental footprint.

A Shared Commitment to Decarbonization

Per Westling, Managing Director of Stena RoRo, emphasizes their dedication to sustainability and future-proofing with multi-fuel combustion engines. The collaboration with Wärtsilä represents a significant step in achieving their vision of having the greenest Ro-Ro vessels on the market.
