  • The project commenced in late 2022 and involved a three-party cooperative development approach.
  • One has been exploring the potential of using ammonia as a zero-emission alternative fuel, aligning with its alternative fuels roadmap released in 2022.
  • DNV’s Regional Manager, Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria, emphasized ammonia’s promise as a future marine fuel and expressed confidence in DNV’s rules for ammonia to facilitate safe adoption once the infrastructure is established.
  • Koshiro Wake, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy & Sustainability Department at ONE, highlighted ammonia’s potential for lower GHG emissions and expressed commitment to further research in this area.

Joint Vessel Development & Ammonia Research

In late 2022, ONE, Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd. (NSY), and DNV, the classification society, embarked on a joint development project, resulting in the creation of the latest 3,500 TEU vessel, recognized with an AiP award.

One has reportedly been researching the possibility of ammonia as a zero-emission alternative fuel by the alternative fuels roadmap published by ONE in 2022. In connection with the plan, ONE took part in a GCMD-led ammonia bunkering pilot safety investigation.

Koshiro Wake, Senior Vice President of the Corporate Strategy & Sustainability Department at ONE, said: “Ammonia is one of the primary focuses of our research as ammonia fuel has a great potential of generating lower GHG emissions than conventional marine fuels. We are pleased to have made such progress, and we will continue our study on ammonia.”

DNV’s Ammonia Outlook & ONE’s Service Update

Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria, Regional Manager South East Asia, Pacific and India, Maritime at DNV, stated: “Ammonia is one of the promising future marine fuels with great potential to decarbonize shipping.

“We are confident that DNV’s rules for ammonia will help our customers to safely adopt this new fuel type once the infrastructure is in place. We are grateful to our JDP partners for entrusting us with this pioneering project that will help the entire maritime industry to adopt ammonia as a marine fuel.”

This month, ONE announced that the Asia Red Sea 1 (AR1) service would be temporarily suspended due to recent developments around the Red Sea.
