Tokyo-based tanker operator Asahi Tanker tested B24 biofuel blend for two weeks on one of its vessels.
Biofuel trial
The tanker, Sunny Orion, was bunkered with 237 mt of B24 biofuel blend in Singapore. The blend was sourced from Marubeni, a licensed bunker supplier in Singapore.
The B24 blend contained 24% fatty acid methyl ester (FAME)-based biofuel derived from used cooking oil and 76% VLSFO. Biofuel component of the fuel is International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC) certified.
ISCC is a global certification system that sets standards for the sustainable production, sourcing and trade of all kinds of bio-based feedstocks and biofuels.
The tanker “consumed the fuel that had been refueled over a period of about two weeks without any problems with the main engine,” Asahi Tanker said.
“Furthermore, by using this biofuel, we expect to be able to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 15-20% compared to the VLSFO used previously,” the company claimed.
