  • Maris Fiducia Norway has partnered with HAV Hydrogen, Norwegian Hydrogen, and Ankerbeer to develop hydrogen-powered dry-bulk vessels.
  • The vessels, designed by Ankerbeer, will operate under a zero-emission time charter agreement with Schulte & Bruns, demonstrating the feasibility of hydrogen technologies.
  • Key components include HAV Hydrogen’s scalable energy systems and Norwegian Hydrogen’s production and distribution network, ensuring a comprehensive approach to decarbonizing shipping.

In an ambitious move towards sustainable maritime transportation, Maris Fiducia Norway has joined forces with HAV Hydrogen, Norwegian Hydrogen, and ship designer Ankerbeer. This collaboration aims to develop, build, and operate hydrogen-powered dry-bulk vessels across Europe, marking a significant step towards zero-emission shipping. The project underlines the necessity of combining expertise from various sectors to tackle the environmental challenges facing the shipping industry.

Strategic Partnerships for Sustainable Shipping

The partnership between Maris Fiducia and its collaborators highlights the strategic importance of joining forces with specialized companies to achieve sustainability goals. Maris Fiducia brings decades of experience in advanced ship design and environmentally friendly maritime logistics, operating a fleet focused on sustainable shipping solutions. HAV Hydrogen contributes its expertise in developing scalable hydrogen-based energy systems, essential for the main propulsion and auxiliary power of the vessels. Norwegian Hydrogen ensures a reliable supply of green hydrogen through its extensive production and distribution network, providing the necessary infrastructure to support the hydrogen-powered vessels. This comprehensive collaboration aims to prove the feasibility and benefits of hydrogen as a maritime fuel, setting a precedent for future zero-emission shipping projects.

Innovative Design and Technology Integration

The vessels designed by Ankerbeer are central to the project, incorporating cutting-edge hydrogen technologies to achieve zero emissions. The integration of HAV Hydrogen’s Zero Emission Pod (ZEPOD®) is a critical innovation, offering a complete hydrogen energy system within a deckhouse. This technology, approved in principle by DNV, showcases the potential for hydrogen to replace conventional fuels in maritime applications. The vessels, once operational, will be classed by DNV and registered in the Norwegian International Ship Register (NIS), ensuring compliance with the highest industry standards. The collaboration not only focuses on the technical aspects but also aims to inspire and pave the way for broader adoption of hydrogen technologies in the maritime sector.

Commercial Viability and Environmental Impact

The project’s commercial viability is underscored by the zero-emission time charter agreement with Schulte & Bruns, which will operationalize the hydrogen-powered vessels. This agreement demonstrates confidence in the economic and environmental benefits of the new technology, providing a model for future commercial operations. The collaboration aims to reduce the maritime industry’s carbon footprint significantly, aligning with global sustainability goals and regulatory requirements. By establishing a commercially viable operation, the partnership sets a benchmark for the maritime industry, proving that zero-emission shipping is not only possible but also practical and beneficial for the environment.
