Maersk has launched the first deepsea container service in Ukraine since the Russian invasion prompted major carriers to withdraw. In collaboration with Ukrainian feeder operator Iteris, this new service connects Ukraine’s deepsea port of Chornomorsk with Romania’s Constanta container terminal, marking a significant development in the region’s maritime logistics.
Revival of Container Shipping
The new service utilizes a vessel with over 1,100 TEU capacity to bring empty containers to Ukraine for exporters and ship full cargo containers to Constanta for transhipment. Major carriers like Arkas, CMA CGM, Evergreen, and MSC are sharing space on this service, highlighting a collaborative effort to revive container shipping in the region.
Expected Growth and Expansion
Daniil Melnychenko of Informal BG anticipates that shipping volumes will double in the coming months, with more shipping lines likely to join the service. There is potential for the service to bypass the Romanian gateway and ship directly to Ukraine from Egypt and Turkey, restoring the routes that were common before the war.
Transition from Barge to Deepwater Services
Previously, Iteris and Maersk had operated a barge service between the Ukrainian Danube port of Reni and Constanta. However, with the launch of the deepwater service, this barge service has been discontinued. The last barge is scheduled for 15 June. Additionally, Turkish shipping line Akkon has introduced a feeder service with its ships into Chornomorsk, positioning itself as a key player with significant volumes due to its established service to the Danube’s Izmail port since the war began.
