  • Damen Shipyards Group has signed a contract with the UK’s Portland Harbour Authority (PHA) to supply one of its latest tugboats, the ASD Tug 2111.
  • This agreement, finalized at Seawork 2024 on June 11th, 2024, marks the arrival of the ASD Tug 2111 in the UK market.

Compact Powerhouse: The ASD Tug 2111

The ASD Tug 2111 is a highly maneuverable tugboat designed for efficient harbor operations. Despite its relatively compact size of 21 meters, it packs a powerful punch with 50 tonnes of bollard pull, making it ideal for assisting various vessels within Portland Harbour.

Key Features and Innovations

  • Single Winch, Dual Operations: The winch’s strategic placement within the deckhouse allows for both forward and aft towing operations using just one winch, streamlining operations and potentially reducing crew requirements.
  • Enhanced Visibility: The full vision bridge offers an unobstructed 360-degree view, improving situational awareness for the crew and contributing to safer harbor operations.
  • Two-Person Operation: The combination of innovative features allows the ASD Tug 2111 to be operated efficiently with a crew of only two.
  • Environmental Responsibility: The tug will be equipped with Damen’s Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system, ensuring compliance with the IMO Tier III regulations from the very beginning. This system significantly reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, contributing to cleaner air and a more sustainable port environment.

Benefits of Portland Harbour Authority

  • Enhanced Operational Efficiency: The ASD Tug 2111’s maneuverability, single winch design, and potential for two-person operation will streamline harbor operations at Portland Harbour.
  • Environmental Compliance: The IMO Tier III compliant engine with SCR system demonstrates the PHA’s commitment to environmental responsibility and aligns with the sensitive ecosystem surrounding the harbor.
  • Faster Delivery: Damen’s proactive building strategy allows customers to benefit from shorter delivery times, with the ASD Tug 2111 expected to arrive later this year.

Ideal for the UK Market

The ASD Tug 2111’s compact size makes it particularly well-suited for the UK towage sector, falling just below the MCA’s 200 Gross Tonnage (GT) threshold.

Mike Shipley, General Manager (Marine) and Harbour Master at PHA, highlights the value of the new tug for Portland Harbour’s diverse needs, its contribution to environmental responsibility, and the benefit of the swift delivery timeframe. Frederik van der Linde, Damen Sales Manager United Kingdom and Ireland, expresses his delight in welcoming the PHA to the Damen family and acknowledges the strong reception the ASD Tug 2111 has received for its impressive capabilities in a compact design.

Overall, this agreement signifies Damen’s growing presence in the UK market and the ASD Tug 2111’s potential to become a valuable asset for harbor operations, particularly those prioritizing environmental responsibility.
