Result of Collaboration

The shore power project in Port Miami is a result of a collaboration between Miami-Dade County, the electric company Florida Power & Light Company, and a consortium of six cruise companies, comprising Carnival Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International and Virgin Voyages.

The company will provide shore-side electricity for cruise ships at terminals V (Virgin Voyages), F (Carnival Cruise Line), A (Royal Caribbean International), B (Norwegian Cruise Line) and MSC Cruises.

Port Miami is the first major cruise port on the east coast of the US, offering shore power capability at five cruise berths, the county claims.

Shore Power & Funding

Shore power or cold ironing, has been gaining traction across port operators and ship operators globally to reduce emissions while a ship is berthed.

This month, the Alabama Port Authority applied for $69 million in federal funding under the EPA’s Clean Ports initiative to reduce emissions at the Port of Mobile, US, with part of the funding allocated for three shore power units provided by Alabama Power.

Last month, the Port of Antwerp revealed that the shore power facility in the Antwerp Euroterminal (AET) will begin operations in 2026.
