Blue World Technologies has achieved a significant milestone in maritime decarbonization with the successful testing of the world’s first 200 kW high-temperature PEM fuel cell module. The test took place at Blue World’s newly established test facilities adjacent to their fuel cell factory in Aalborg, Denmark. The system’s performance exceeded expectations, marking a major advancement in green maritime technology.
Key Features and Benefits of the 200 kW HT PEM Fuel Cell System
- High Electrical Efficiency: The system boasts an electrical efficiency of up to 55% when it reaches the commercial stage, translating to a fuel saving of 20-30% and enabling cost-efficient use of green fuels.
- Carbon Capture Capability: The fuel cell system allows for up to 100% carbon capture, which can be utilized in green fuel production or for storage, contributing to net-zero operations when powered by renewable methanol.
- Environmental Impact: The system operates with no NOx, SOx, or particulate emissions, ensuring it does not contribute to air pollution. Additionally, it provides high-grade waste heat of 150°C.
Successful Validation and Future Prospects
- Initial Testing: The initial testing phase validated the system setup, including the methanol fuel processor, series connection of fuel cell stacks, and balance of plant components.
- Comments from Blue World Technologies: Dennis Naldal Jensen, Chief Technology Officer, emphasized the significance of this breakthrough in decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors, while Anders Korsgaard, CEO and Co-founder, highlighted the milestone in technology development and the promising collaboration with Maersk.
Collaboration with Maersk and Future Installations
- 1 MW System for Maersk: The first pilot system, a 1 MW system for onboard power production, will be installed on one of A.P. Moller–Maersk’s large dual fuel-enabled methanol vessels, expected during H1 2026.
- Investment and Support: Maersk Growth, the venture arm of A.P. Moller–Maersk, along with other investors, has supported Blue World Technologies with an 11 million EUR pre-C-round investment, underscoring the potential of HT PEM fuel cell technology.
Commercial and Environmental Goals
- Auxiliary Power Systems: Blue World will initially supply systems for auxiliary power, aiming to reach a commercial level by 2027.
- Future Expansion: The company plans to develop multi-megawatt propulsion systems for global shipping, where the fuel cell technology will have the most significant environmental impact.
- Scalable and Modular Design: The system is designed with a modular approach, allowing for containerized solutions on deck or integrated into the ship, facilitating a flexible and scalable deployment.
