DNV Unveils Updated Ship Classification Rules To Champion Decarbonization

125

  • DNV, a renowned classification society, has announced significant updates to its rules governing the classification of ships and offshore structures.
  • These revisions prioritize supporting the development and deployment of decarbonization technologies within the maritime industry.

Enhanced Framework for Existing Vessels

A core focus of the update is the introduction of a new in-operation class framework. This framework aims to bring clarity to the division of responsibilities between shipyards (during the new build phase) and owners/operators (during the operational phase) for notations that encompass both design and operational requirements. Additionally, it empowers owners and operators to showcase their dedication to safety and efficiency through the implementation of advanced operational procedures and robust reporting processes.

Spearheading Decarbonization Efforts

DNV’s commitment to a cleaner maritime future is further emphasized by the introduction of two new class notations:

  • Gas Fueled Hydrogen: This notation establishes a comprehensive set of requirements for the fuel system, bunkering connection, and consumers onboard hydrogen-fueled vessels. This practical approach paves the way for the development of hydrogen-powered newbuilds, even in the absence of established international regulations for this zero-carbon fuel.
  • OCCS (Onboard Carbon Capture and Storage): This notation provides a framework and specific requirements for these innovative systems, encompassing exhaust pre-treatment, absorption, after-treatment systems, liquefaction units, CO2 storage solutions, and transfer systems for discharging captured CO2 onshore.

A Compendium of Additional Advancements

Beyond the focus on decarbonization, the updated rules encompass a range of other noteworthy additions:

  • BOG (Boil-off Gas) Notation: Provides clear requirements for the design and installation of pressure and temperature control systems within liquefied gas tanks.
  • Live Fish Transport Notation: Creates a dedicated classification category for vessels operating in this growing industry segment.
  • Stability Pontoon Notation: Offers specific guidance and requirements for pontoons used to enhance stability during heavy-lift operations.
  • Hatchcoverless Notation with NC Qualifier: Enables vessels not intended for transporting combustible materials to reduce investments in fire detection and firefighting equipment.
  • Floating Spaceport Service Notation: Establishes a framework with specific requirements for units and installations used for launching and recovering spacecraft.
  • EV Qualifier for Additional Fire Safety Notation: Addresses the unique fire safety considerations of vessels transporting electric vehicles.
  • Revised Diving System Rules: Aligns with the latest IMO 2023 diving code.

These comprehensive updates solidify DNV’s position as a leader in fostering innovation and safety within the maritime industry. By prioritizing the development of decarbonization technologies and establishing clear frameworks for emerging technologies, DNV plays a crucial role in steering the maritime sector towards a more sustainable and technologically advanced future.
