On January 21, a cargo vessel reportedly allided against a dividing jetty due to strong river currents in the Danube.
What happened?
The cargo vessel ‘Dunav 3’, loaded with 1.000 tons fertilizer and two crew members onboard and proceeding downstream on the Danube when it was caught in strong river currents.
The vessel was enroute from Nuremberg to Krems, suffered water ingress on the Danube near Winzer.
Water ingress:
When the vessel was sailing downstream, the 54 year Romanian skipper reported water ingress upon entering the lock in Regensburg and alerted the fire rescue.
The ship had been caught by river currents and was pushed against a dividing jetty resulting a breach in the hull. The rescue forces secured the barge at the northern river shore and then started dewatering it with the ship’s own and external pumps.
Escorted to safety:
Shortly afterwards, the cargo vessel was pulled into the lock at Pfaffenstein, escorted by fire boats and the water rescue.
The vessel is currently moored at the Oberpfalz Bridge, where dewatering process is ongoing. The vessel will be inspected further for repairs and the breach in the hull will be patched.
