[Watch] Fire Consumes a Moored Ship

1755

On 1st March, a vessel was ravaged by fire when it was moored in the Moskva River in Russia’s capital Moscow.

What happened?

The vessel was moored in Central Moscow when it caught fire; the vessel was moored near a shopping mall. The reason for the vessel catching fire remains unknown but within minutes the ship was engulfed in flames. The crew members who were present on board the vessel were unsuccessful in containing the fire.

Fire-fighters battle flames

The fire-fighters were immediately dispatched to the scene of the fire and they were having a hard time containing the fire.

The fire spread over some 200 square meters, engulfing the entire vessel. Some 100 fire-fighters and 30 ground vehicles were dispatched to the scene along with a fire ship. Despite the fire fighters’ efforts, the fire had consumed the entire ship, engulfing some 1000 square meters.

Water pumped from river

The lack of fire hydrants in the vicinity has hampered the efforts to contain the fire. Fire-fighters had to drill a hole in the ice and pump water directly from the Moskva River.

Furthermore, the rescuers discovered a “likely illegal” electric cable running along the embankment, which posed an electrocution threat to the fire fighting teams. Disabling the cable also took time, which allowed the fire to spread through the ship.

None injured

Fortunately, no one was onboard the vessel when it caught fire and fire-fighters are fighting to minimize the risk of neighbouring buildings catching on fire.

The burning vessel has storage of 7 tons of fuel in its tanks.
