UASC’s newly built container vessel scored about 50% below the IMO 2025 limit.
United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) has acquired a new container vessel by name Barzan. This vessel that has reached the Belgian port of Zeebrugge’s APMT Terminal on July 3, received the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) score. The EEDI measures the CO2 emitted (grams of CO2 per tonne nautical mile) for new ships, calculated from ship design and engine performance data. Barzan is the first vessel inducted in a series of six 18,800 TEU container vessels ordered by UASC. The vessel is the first to receive classification society DNV GL’s new GAS READY notation.
Highlights of the new vessel:
- This vessel has scored an Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) value approximately 50% lower than the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2025 limit.
- The carbon output per TEU is 60% less than that of the 13500 TEU vessels delivered in the last three years.

United Arab Shipping Company is expecting to add ten more new eco efficient ships to their fleet in 2015.
