Australian Demonstration Plant Begins Operation toward the Development of a CO2-free Hydrogen Supply Chain ENEOS Corporation (President: Saito Takeshi, hereinafter “ENEOS”) announces that it has constructed a demonstration plant*1 in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia, to produce methylcyclohexane*2 (hereinafter “MCH”), a type of hydrogen carrier, using its proprietary low-cost “electrochemical synthesis of organic hydride” method*3 (Direct MCH ®*4). The opening ceremony was held today, January 30, and the plant will begin operation in February.
Renewable energy
In order to create MCH derived from renewable energy in large quantities, ENEOS has worked to scale up electrolyzers using Direct MCH® technology (Green MCH). This initiative includes the operation of the demonstration plant. The medium-sized 150-kilowatt electrolyzer, for which ENEOS recently developed the technology, is made up of stacked electrodes with a surface area of 3 square metres, which is around 200 times larger than the electrolyzer used in the 2021 demonstration*5. With electrodes that are almost the largest in size currently utilised in industry, the electrolyzer achieves higher efficiency in MCH manufacturing. In Queensland, which is well suited for solar power generation, the demonstration facility will combine the medium-sized electrolyzer with a 250-kilowatt solar power system to create green MCH. The plant will confirm the durability of the electrolyzer under subtropical conditions and develop the best operating and control technologies for it when plant operation is adjusted to match variations in solar power during the roughly eight-month demonstration period from February to September 2023, with the goal of maximising production efficiency.
