  • BSM has implemented advanced measures and tools to meet the upcoming FuelEU Maritime regulation, effective from 2025.
  • The FuelEU Dashboard and Simulator provide real-time insights into GHG intensity, compliance balances, and penalties.
  • BSM’s system offers expert advice on fuel choices, compliance technologies, and strategies to reduce costs and penalties.

As the FuelEU Maritime regulation prepares to take effect in 2025, Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM) has unveiled a suite of advanced measures and digital tools integrated into its emission management services. BSM reports that these efforts are designed to ensure smooth compliance with complex requirements while offering value-added insights for its clients.

Compliance Milestone Achieved

By 31 August 2024, BSM had successfully submitted Monitoring Plans for all vessels within the scope of FuelEU Maritime to authorized verifiers. This proactive step ensured that its managed vessels fully complied with the regulations from the outset.

Over the past year, BSM has focused on providing its clients with the resources and tools required to navigate the new regulatory framework effectively.

Anil Jacob, Head of Fleet Performance at BSM, emphasized: “We have developed integrated IT systems and procedures ensuring the accurate monitoring, recording, correction, and reporting of all relevant voyage and emission data of FuelEU effected vessels.”

Tools for Enhanced Efficiency and Forecasting

BSM has introduced the FuelEU Dashboard, a tool integrated into its PAL ship management software, which calculates:

  1. Anticipated GHG intensity
  2. Compliance balance
  3. Expected FuelEU penalties

These functionalities enable shipowners to track compliance status and make data-driven decisions to minimize penalties through accurate fuel type reporting.

FuelEU Simulator for Actionable Insights

The FuelEU Simulator is a dynamic tool that allows users to simulate the effects of operational changes on compliance costs. It provides vessel-specific insights, including:

  1. The impact of switching to shore power
  2. Estimations of biofuel requirements for single voyages or fleets
This simulation offers full transparency and actionable recommendations tailored to customer needs.

Expert Advice and Flexible Compliance Options

BSM’s system also supports pool management, where users can group vessels into compliance pools to optimize penalties and maintain GHG intensity targets. The tool continuously tracks these pools for compliance status and cost exposure.

Additionally, customers receive guidance on fuel options, compliance technologies, and strategies to minimize penalties, providing flexibility in meeting regulatory requirements.

Anil Jacob highlighted: “We offer our customers a full and transparent picture of each of their ships and vessel-specific solutions. This ensures the certainty of having all aspects and options fully in view and being able to make substantiated decisions.”

With the introduction of the FuelEU Dashboard, Simulator, and comprehensive support services, BSM ensures its clients are compliant with the FuelEU Maritime regulation and equipped to make cost-effective and sustainable decisions.
