1952

Master Sentenced For Violating Navigation Rules And Damaging Cable

A court in Annaba handed down a six-month term plus 406 euro fine to Du Chang Long, master of the 28,200–dwt vessel for cutting the fiber optic cable linking Annaba city to Marseille.

The anchors of the ship hit the fibre-optic cable last October, 13km off the coast, bringing down by 80% the country’s internet traffic for six days.  The master was found guilty in violation of navigational regulations and destruction of property of strategic importance.

The detention of the bulker has now been lifted and it is free to leave Annaba.
