Cargo Ship Grounded by Storm in Istanbul

On the evening of 3rd February, a cargo ship was pushed ashore by severe storms in Istanbul’s Zeytinburnu coast, Doğan News Agency reported.

What happened?

The ship, named “Tallas Phnompenh” carrying a Cambodian flag, was in a lay-up since 2015, anchored on the Marmara Sea when it was hit by the winds.

The tugs tried to reach the ship but adverse weather conditions played spoilsport. The incident happened, while the unmanned ship ran out of onboard fuel.

Air traffic impacted

Severe weather conditions took a toll on the air traffic, as several flights were unable to land at Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport. The southwesterly winds prevented them from making a direct landing and many of them had to circle over the airport, one plane even missed its approach while trying to land safely. Another flight was redirected to an airport in the capital Ankara.

Runway directions and the distance between planes along with their frequency of flying were changed in the wake of the new developments. As a result of the measures, traffic in the skies became jammed as planes had to wait in line to make their landings.

Maritime traffic under pressure

Closer to the sea, the maritime traffic also bears the burden of the terrible weather conditions.

Istanbul’s Fast Ferry and Sea Bus Company (İDO) and Bursa’s Fast Ferry and Sea Bus Company (BUDO) both announced the temporary cancellation of some services on Feb. 4 due to the weather.

Even, the cable car services operating between Bursa and the popular ski hub Uludağ were suspended for the day. All modes of transport will be extra cautious until better conditions prevail.
