Cargo Ship Knocks Down Crane Docked at Port

A cargo ship reportedly collide with a crane which was docked at port while entering the port.

What happened?

The “BBC Wisconsin” allided with the quay in Vaasa on June 18, 2017, when entering port at 1.30 p.m. and knocked down a crane of Kvarken Port when being about to take project deliveries from Vaasa to the Caribic.

Crane damaged:

The collapsed crane was old, so the material damages remained limited. However, the ship was close to causing more damage.

Winds cause ship to drift:

The vessel did not use tug assistance when it came into the port. At the time of the event, a moderate windy wind was blowing which could have caused the ship to drift toward the dock and the crane that was destroyed by the allision.

There were an experienced pilot and the captain involved in the decision not to use a tug. Next the debris of the broken crane has to be removed.

Investigation initiated:

The port officials have initiated investigation to determine the cause of the accident. Fortunately, during the incident no injury or water pollution reported.
