CMA CGM and SUEZ Partner to Boost Biomethane for Greener Shipping

104

CMA CGM Group, a leader in global maritime, air, and logistics solutions, has partnered with SUEZ, a leading circular waste management company, to produce renewable fuel for CMA CGM’s vessels. The collaboration was formalized through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on October 18, which outlines plans to produce up to 100,000 tonnes of biomethane annually by 2030. This partnership aims to advance biomethane as a renewable fuel option, supporting CMA CGM’s ambitious goal of achieving Net Zero Carbon by 2050 and reducing the environmental footprint of maritime shipping in Europe.

Renewable Fuel Production for Maritime Decarbonization

This partnership between CMA CGM and SUEZ focuses on producing biomethane, a clean energy alternative derived from waste recovery. As a sustainable fuel for CMA CGM’s gas-powered vessels, biomethane will support the transition to lower-carbon fuels and contribute significantly to reducing carbon emissions in the maritime industry. By securing up to 100,000 tonnes of biomethane per year from SUEZ, CMA CGM will bolster its decarbonization efforts, ensuring that its fleet remains at the forefront of sustainability in shipping.

Joint Investment to Establish Biomethane Production Infrastructure

To lay the foundation for biomethane production, the two companies will create a joint investment structure with an initial 100 million euros dedicated to building production facilities. These sites, strategically located in Europe, will initially serve CMA CGM’s needs but may expand to supply other stakeholders within the industry, promoting biomethane’s broader adoption. Through this commitment, CMA CGM and SUEZ aim to catalyze the infrastructure necessary for renewable fuel supply chains, aligning their efforts with regional decarbonization goals.

Collaborative Research and Technological Innovation

The partnership also emphasizes joint research and development initiatives to pioneer new technologies for biofuel production, including hydrothermal gasification processes. These R&D efforts will focus on optimizing production methods and advancing innovative technologies to increase biomethane availability. This collaborative innovation underscores CMA CGM and SUEZ’s dedication to accelerating the energy transition in maritime logistics and waste management.

A Shared Vision for Sustainable Shipping and Energy Independence

The strategic alliance between CMA CGM and SUEZ signals a significant step toward achieving energy independence for France and Europe. Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of CMA CGM Group, underscored the partnership’s importance in supporting CMA CGM’s carbon neutrality objectives while enhancing the resilience and sustainability of its energy supply. SUEZ’s commitment to transforming waste into renewable resources further highlights its ambition to make sustainable energy accessible to the transportation sector.

Through this partnership, both CMA CGM and SUEZ aim to establish a sustainable circular economy that powers cleaner and more resilient supply chains for maritime transport, a vital sector in Europe’s energy transition.
