CMB.TECH and Boeckmans are partnering to build four 5,000dwt hydrogen-powered cargo vessels aimed at significantly reducing greenhouse emissions in the maritime industry, reports CMB tech.
Timeline
The first vessel is slated for delivery in the second half of 2025, with construction taking place at the Dung Quat shipyard in Vietnam. These ships will operate across major sea routes, including northern Europe, the Mediterranean, North Africa, and West Africa.
Future-Proof Design
The cargo vessel design, developed in conjunction with Handelskade, incorporates diesel-electric engines placed under the ship’s forward accommodation. This design allows the stern to accommodate innovative propulsion systems like hydrogen, along with ample space for storing alternative low-carbon fuel sources.
Emission Reduction
Through hull shaping, advanced design, and the latest technologies, emissions are anticipated to be 40% lower compared to traditional diesel general cargo vessels. Further reduction is expected by integrating sustainable propulsion systems and creating storage for fuels such as hydrogen.
