7-week-old Conjoined Twin Girls Separated

Doctors at a Kentucky hospital performed an eight-hour surgery and separated conjoined twin girls.

A 7-week-old twin girls who were born joined at the chest and abdominal cavity were separated after an eight-hour long surgery.  The girls shared some heart structures and their livers were connected.

Conjoined twins are identical twins joined in utero.  An extremely rare phenomenon, the occurrence is estimated to range from 1 in 49,000 births to 1 in 189,000 births,

Doctors proceeded to perform this crucial surgery as both girls needed increased breathing support.  The long term effects of such surgery are not known.  The doctors have been “cautiously optimistic” about the girl’s future.
