[Watch] Cruise Ship with a Ferrari Racetrack

2023

On its newest ship, Norwegian Cruise Lines will premiere the world’s first “racetrack” at sea in partnership with Ferrari.

When the Norwegian Joy makes its debut this summer, it will feature a two-level track for up to 10 drivers to race go-karts up to 40 miles per hour.

It appears that the racetrack is more of a branding opportunity for Ferrari than for guests to feel like they’re actually driving an Italian sports car. The track — and the go-kart that zip around it — will be branded in signature Ferrari red. Scuderia Ferrari Watches will also set up a shop right next to the track.

The racetrack will have cameras at the finish line, snapping photographs for drivers to share online.

Passengers who book stays in the cruise ship’s higher-end The Haven and Concierge classes will be able to access “a number of complimentary rides” on the racetrack for free, according to a press release. All others will have to pay.

The Norwegian Joy will be one of the biggest ships in the fleet when Norwegian takes possession of the ship on April 27. It is 1,094 feet long, 136 feet wide and weighs 168,800 gross tons. The ship will be capable of carrying 3,850 passengers.

Besides a go-kart track, the Norwegian Joy will also feature hovercraft bumper cars, an interactive VR theater and a two-person waterslide that will allow guests to race each other in inner tubes.

The ship will sail out of China, with home ports in Shanghai and Tianjin (close to Beijing). The vessel is due to be christened on June 27.
